What sort of events does the Foundation do?

Winter Training

During the winter months the Andrew Cassell Foudnation trains alternate weekends. We sail where conditions permit building up racing skills and drills which make participants better sailors. Where the conditions are not safe to sail there are theory work and maintenance training sessions. While new participants are welcome at any time, we know that they will get most benefit from undertaking winter training before there summer series starts.

Summer Training

As they rest of the Solent wakes up to sailing our participants are raring to go, having refined their skills during the winter. The summer training series also runs alternate weekends, although there may be some ‘extra’ weekends tacked in where appropriate. In general in the summer our focus is on integrating participants into combinations who perform well together and exploring more advanced skills and racing manoeuvres. However throughout this period the Foundation tends also to be integrating new sailors to the Foundation so there is always some flexibility.

Summer Series

Its usual for the Foudnation to participate in one or more of the handicap race series. In past years this has included things run by xthe SSRA, CCYC and on the Thursday evening East Cowes Yacht Club series which offer the opportunity for our more experienced crews to race more independently.

Cowes week

The highlight of the Solent racing season, and a crowning achievement for our participants is to race during Cowes Week.

Other regattas

From time to time the Foundation also participates in other keelboat regattas and the Sonar Nationals. These regattas can only be undertaken where there is sufficient funding and participant commitment.
